The fees for national forest camping vary depending on where you are staying. For those who want to camp in a campsite, reservations are often required.

For those who are interested in information about national forest camping fees, the USFS has created a website. It also provides an interactive map. You can view what amenities are available at various campgrounds. It also includes a "Fire Danger TODAY” section that displays the current danger levels. The rules for allowing campfires vary by country. Visitors should plan their trip to avoid being subject to a fire ban.

Dispersed camp is a popular choice for camping in wilderness areas. This method is used often by hikers, van-lifers, off-roaders and van lifers. This is not a permanent solution and you must have basic survival skills. The campsite you choose must be at least a half-mile from any roads or trails and 200 yards from any water source. This rule is only applicable to the Brown Mountain OHV Trail System where campsites can be reserved. Green Ridge headquarters requires that anyone planning to stay for more than one night obtain a permit. Permits cost $10.

Backpacking is another popular way of dispersed camping. There are permits that can be obtained for backpacking in most of these areas. Before leaving, make sure to review the Leave No Trace guidelines.

Consider how many people will be staying on the site. Groups can be accommodated at some campsites, but they will cost more than regular sites. Some campsites offer additional fire rings and picnic tables. Backpackers will need an itinerary.

The USFS has an interactive map that allows visitors to find the best sites for their specific activities. You can also download a map directly from the website. The map also includes icons for boat ramps, hiking trails, cabins, and other recreation symbols. The maps can be viewed from a computer or on an Android and Apple phone.

If you are planning a daytrip, it is a good idea to call the campground ahead of time and request a reservation. Some ranger districts allow you to make phone reservations. Others only accept mail reservations. You can lose your first night's camping fees if the date is not met.

If you are going to be traveling by RV, you will need to obtain a state forest camping permit. Each campsite is limited to two vehicles and no more than five people per campsite. Pets are not allowed on campsites without registration.

If you cannot find a campsite that fits your needs, it might be worth contacting the local national forest offices. They might be willing to recommend an alternative campsite or make one available to you.
